How do you measure an Engaged member?

What does an engaged member look like? Lots of forum or blog post? Connections? Attends every event?

If you could have some way of measuring engagement, what would be that calculation? How do you get members to keep coming back to the site apart from paying dues or registering for an event?

I think involvement in social elements is important in addition to the other items that you have set. Many nonprofit organization set up full bench-marking feature and report card type logging which take into account a member's engagement score on a number of levels (such as social media shares, forums comments, comments and participation in groups, event attendance, length of membership, etc.) and then use that to come out with a total score of their engagement in the organization which now incorporates all the various aspects. I don't know that it can be one or the other, but needs to be inclusive of all their activities. Here are some items we would be looking at:
  • Renewal rate
  • Forum participation
  • Groups participation
  • Leadership/committee involvement (or volunteer activities depending on your org.)
  • Social media participation
  • Member referral's
  • Event attendance
  • Participation in our online training and education
  • Responses/participation to our calls to action

If there was a report card type of feature that would be pretty cool. If it had the ability for us to input some elements which may not be run through YM (such as social media channels) and whatnot, that would be neat. Or if it just took a score for elements it did have under it's control that could be plugged into an organizations more all-encompassing bench-marking trackers.

The report card view is an interesting concept. Would this a percentage out of 100 or a letter-type grade?

We have the concept of Gamification in that an organization can assign varying points for different actions taken by a member.  This concept of Engagement is another level of this in that we want to show the member their Engagement but does it need to be a score?  If you saw your score was 40 what actions would you take? Rather than score would it be beneficial to see how your actions compare to last month?  Last month shows 3 comments, 4 likes, 2 posts while this month only shows 1 comment. You would see a graph type UI element that would show you, the member, visually how last month and this month compare.

I like the concept of using your duration as a member and not having any lapses.  Do you feel a member is more engaged if they renew early and never hit their expiration date?

We also are looking to show the top 3 contributors. This would be those who 'score' higher than others but I struggle with what actions a member will take when they see the top 3 contributors.

I'm just starting to look into engagement for our organization. I've not gotten very far, but have entered a bunch of data as inactive groups and planned to export that info and just do a manual look at who's doing what. Right now I just want to track to see what members aren't doing anything with us meaning they are more likely to let their membership lapse.

It would be great if I could easily see who's participating in surveys, opening emails sent, renewing early. It would be even better if I can use something besides groups to track contest entries, winners, etc.

I'm not far enough along to want the sophistication of monthly participation (quite honestly we don't use a lot of the YM features such as blogs, forums, etc.) but I would just like to easily pull reports to see how many are participating in webinars, what % of our members sign up for events, etc. and who isn't doing anything.

Related to this, would be how long they've been a member. If they continue to renew year after year, but have no other "engagement" w/us, that tells me they get what they need from us even if they don't seem engaged. This type of activity would concern me for new members, though, and I might do some additional touch points with this group.

Again, since I'm just getting started in this, I was looking at measuring level of engagement as on an annual basis was the member:
Fully engaged - 4-5 elements
Somewhat engaged - 2-3 elements
Not really engaged - 0-1 element
